1) Participant-identified

Meal: Eating occasions reported by respondents as breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and supper

Snack: Eating occasions reported by respondents as snack, morning/afternoon tea and beverage break.

2) Time-of-day

Meal: Largest eating occasion (kJ) occurring between 05:30–9:30; 11:30–14:30 & 17:00–21:30 h

Snack: All other eating occasions

Neutral eating occasions

3) 15-min time interval

An individual eating occasion is separated in time from the preceding and succeeding EO by > 15 min.

4) 15-min time interval plus 21 kJ energy criterion

An individual eating occasion contains a minimum energy content of 21 kJ (5 kcal) and is separated in time from the preceding and succeeding eating occasions by > 15 min.

5) 15-min time interval plus 210 kJ energy criterion

An individual eating occasion contains a minimum energy content of 210 kJ (50 kcal) and is separated in time from the preceding and succeeding eating occasions by > 15 min.

6) 60-min time interval

An individual eating occasion is separated in time from the preceding and succeeding eating occasions by > 60 min.

7) 60-min time interval plus 21 kJ energy criterion

An individual eating occasion contains a minimum energy content of 21 kJ (5 kcal) and is separated in time from the preceding and succeeding eating occasions by > 60 min.

8) 60-min time interval plus 210 kJ energy criterion

An individual eating occasions contains a minimum energy content of 210 kJ (50 kcal) and is separated in time from the preceding and succeeding eating occasions by > 60 min.
